Lightsabers and stands

Project Type

3D design and printing

This project explores the design, 3D printing and finishing of a collection of Star Wars-inspired lightsabers and bespoke display stands, combining digital fabrication with detailed prop-making.

Each lightsaber is produced as a multi-part print, allowing different materials, colours and finishes to recreate the distinctive mechanical character of each design. Individual components are printed, prepared and assembled before additional detailing is added to bring out features such as metallic surfaces, grips, emitters, controls and exposed mechanical elements.

Rather than treating the stand as an afterthought, I designed the displays to become part of the finished piece. Each stand is tailored to its lightsaber, incorporating custom geometry, character identification, illuminated elements and themed detailing to turn the printed prop into something that can be properly displayed.

The project combines several disciplines I particularly enjoy: 3D modelling, additive manufacturing, iterative prototyping, electronics, assembly and finishing. Designs often evolve through multiple printed prototypes as tolerances, structural strength, component fit and visual proportions are refined.

The result is a growing collection in which each lightsaber has its own identity while still belonging to a consistent display system — demonstrating how relatively accessible 3D-printing technology can be used to create complex, highly personalised objects that would otherwise be difficult or expensive to manufacture.
